40 minutes of chaos
In less than an hour, squally thundershowers, hail, and winds reaching 50 kmph battered the city’s central areas. Nearly 77 mm of rainfall inundated key zones, turning roads into streams and bringing traffic to a standstill.
Areas such as MG Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, BTM Layout, and Silk Board witnessed waterlogging of up to 2–3 feet.
Lives lost in multiple incidents
Seven people died when the compound wall of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital collapsed in Shivajinagar. Among the victims was a six-year-old girl.
Two others lost their lives due to electrocution during the downpour, while another person died after being struck by debris blown by strong winds.
Power and infrastructure collapse
The storm severely disrupted electricity supply, with over 50 electric poles uprooted and 17 transformers damaged. The helpline of BESCOM received nearly 25,000 distress calls, many of which reportedly went unanswered.
Large parts of the Central Business District were left without power for hours.
Flooding across the city
Floodwaters quickly submerged roads and public spaces. Metro station premises, including Silk Board and Jayadeva, were inundated, while construction zones and open manholes worsened risks for commuters.
Vehicles were partially submerged in several areas, particularly around Sultanpet and Kamaraj Road.
Businesses hit hard
The storm also caused significant losses to local businesses. The Bookworm, a popular bookstore on Church Street, reported damage to nearly 4,000–5,000 books after floodwater entered the premises.
Authorities respond
Siddaramaiah visited affected areas and acknowledged the scale of the disaster. Officials said special engineering teams would be deployed to vulnerable zones.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast more intermittent thundershowers with winds of 30–40 kmph over the next 48 hours.
A city under strain
Though the storm lasted barely 40 minutes, its impact has raised fresh concerns about urban preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
As Bengaluru braces for more rain, the city is once again confronted with the challenge of coping with extreme weather events.
