Bengaluru : The state government is likely to give permission to private managements to start 400 new Pre-University colleges during the next academic year in addition to 5009 existing ones.
The private managements have submitted 444 applications seeking permission to start new colleges and around 90% of those are likely to be approved, according to sources in the Pre-University department. Most applications fulfil the desired infrastructure criteria, sources revealed.
The government had stopped giving permission to start new colleges in 2004 pressure following political pressure from elected representatives for fresh colleges.
When asked about the necessity of new colleges in the state with 5009 functioning at present, the joint director in the PU department in response said “there is enormous pressure on government colleges in terms of admissions and at the same time the government intent to start new colleges cannot be questioned”.
