Bengaluru: All these years, the state government was following 30:1 Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) while calculating the additional teachers. But this year, it has decided to increase the ratio to 70:1.
According to the latest circular issued by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), a teacher is fixed for 70 students. This means, for a school which has strength of 70 students will have a single teacher and the rest of the teachers will be considered as extra teachers. The process of transferring these additional teachers will be started soon.
According to the authorities, with the latest ratio, as many as 10,686 teachers at the primary schools and 1,941 teachers in the high schools will be notified as extra teachers. They will be transferred to neighbouring schools soon.
According to the authorities, the transfer of these extra teachers will begin soon. “The DPI can’t do much because 70:1 is the standard PTR followed in many states. The real problem is poor enrollment in the schools. Actions need to be taken to improve the situation in this area, ” said a senior officer.
