A new initiative in Bengaluru is working to bridge the gap for the city’s underprivileged by helping them register for government social protection schemes, free of charge. Representatives of the program reach out to individuals at public hospitals or even go door-to-door, ensuring that those in need are aware of and able to access essential benefits.
Launched in December 2024, the initiative has already facilitated the transfer of Rs 3.7 crore to over 1,000 beneficiaries, out of 19,000 individuals who have been registered so far. Currently, the program helps people gain access to 32 different schemes, covering a wide range of benefits including health (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), pensions (eShram), banking (Jan Dhan Yojana), and student scholarships, among others.
The initiative, named Windows of Opportunities, was conceptualized by Rotary Bangalore Midtown (RBM) and is being implemented by Swasti, a private agency. Palani Loganathan, President of RBM, explains, “A large sum of money allocated for social welfare remains unclaimed because marginalized communities, who need it the most, are often unaware of these opportunities.” The program aims to change that by directly reaching those who are typically left out of such schemes.
To ensure wider participation, registration kiosks have been set up at Victoria Hospital and Vani Vilas Hospital. Every 30 minutes, representatives make announcements to encourage patients and their families to check if they are eligible for available benefits. After collecting necessary details like Aadhar number, ration card, and marital status, individuals are registered for the relevant schemes using proprietary software. The initiative also helps individuals resolve any discrepancies in their documentation.
Additionally, the program operates in Bommanahalli, where door-to-door outreach is carried out in collaboration with local schools, self-help groups, and the taluk office. Loganathan encourages the public to spread the word within their communities, urging people to inform domestic workers, security guards, and drivers about the kiosks. These are located at Victoria Hospital, near City Market (Monday to Saturday, 10:30 am–1 pm, 2 pm–4 pm) and Vani Vilas Hospital, near Glass House (Monday to Saturday, 2:30 pm–6 pm).
