To mark Autism Awareness Month, a Bengaluru-based NGO has organized a series of puppet performances aimed specifically at children with autism. After two highly successful shows over the past weekends, the team is preparing for their final performance on April 27.
These 30-minute sessions have been thoughtfully crafted by a team of therapists and educators. Instead of relying solely on verbal dialogue, the puppets showcase expressive faces, making it easier for the children to connect with the characters. Additionally, smooth transitions between scenes are incorporated to prevent sensory overload, ensuring a calm and engaging experience for the audience.
Sneha Joshi, one of the event organizers, highlights the importance of creating an accessible space for children with autism, noting, “There are very few performances in Bengaluru for neurodiverse children, and we wanted to provide them with a fun and safe environment.” The puppet shows have been held at different venues across the city, making it possible for families from various neighborhoods to attend. This approach also supports local art and cultural venues that promote inclusion.
The positive feedback from the first two shows has been heartening. Kids have been seen laughing, dancing, and even expressing their eagerness to attend again, making it all worthwhile for the organizers.
