Bengaluru: In a major embarrassment to the state police force, ACP Prabhushankar handed over the Rs 25 lakhs he had taken from cigarette distributors as a bribe to the department after a raid proved that he had collected money.

According to an eight-page report submitted by CCB DCP Ravi, Prabhushankar allegedly collected Rs 62.5 lakhs from two persons to ensure that there will not be any disruption in the cigarette distribution across the state. He had apparently collected this money by using the name of a few senior officials.

The incident came to light recently when two CCB inspectors raided a few cigarette distributors for violating the lockdown norms. At that time, it was found that Prabhushankar had taken a bribe to allow the cigarette distributors to continue their business. They submitted a report to Additional Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil in this regard.

Based on the report, Patil formed an investigating team led by DCP Ravi Kumar. “Prabhushankar wanted to lead this team. But the senior officials of the CCB decide to hand over the investigation to Ravi Kumar. Fearing that his corruption may come out in the open, Prabhushankar handed over the Rs 25 lakhs he had collected from cigarette vendors,” sources added.

“A report has been submitted to DG-IGP Praveen Sood. He is expected to take a call on this matter soon,” confirmed state police sources.
