Passengers arriving on Air India flights at the Kempegowda International Airport were in for a pleasant surprise this Christmas, as the airline transformed a routine baggage claim into a festive celebration that has since gone viral on social media.
Instead of suitcases, travellers waiting at the baggage carousel were greeted by neatly arranged boxes of Christmas gifts rolling out on the conveyor belt. Adding to the cheer, a Santa Claus moved around the arrival area, waving, posing for photographs, and wishing passengers a Merry Christmas.
Viral video captures festive surprise
The heartwarming moment was shared on Instagram by content creator Sanjana Nair. Her video shows gift boxes bearing personalised name tags placed on the baggage belt, replacing the usual luggage.
In the clip, Nair displays her gift along with a note that read: “BLR Airport wishes you a Merry Christmas, Sanjana Nair.” An airport announcement wishing passengers seasonal greetings can also be heard, while smiling travellers are seen recording the moment and clicking pictures with Santa Claus.
The video quickly gained traction online, with viewers praising the airline and airport authorities for creating a joyful and memorable experience.
Social media reacts with humour and praise
Social media users responded with a mix of appreciation and humour. One user joked, “Imagine passengers from other airlines waiting at different baggage belts. Sad.” Another quipped, “When your luggage lands at a different airport, this is the only backup plan.”
Several users also asked what the gift boxes contained, while others shared their own experiences. One passenger commented, “I was there on AI 2727, they gave us too,” confirming the gesture was extended to multiple flights. However, not everyone was lucky, with a traveller writing, “I travelled on Air India from Vijayawada to Delhi today and didn’t receive anything like this.”
Similar gesture on Bengaluru–Mumbai route
This was not an isolated initiative. About a week earlier, Air India passengers travelling from Bengaluru to Mumbai were treated to a similar surprise at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Terminal 2.
At the Mumbai baggage claim, personalised gift boxes were arranged on the conveyor belt for passengers. The festive experience was curated in collaboration with Marriott Bonvoy, with gifts labelled with passengers’ names and seat numbers.
Creating joyful travel experiences
The initiative has been widely appreciated as a thoughtful way to humanise air travel, especially during the holiday season. Many online users felt that such gestures help reduce travel stress and leave passengers with lasting positive memories.
As Indian airports and airlines increasingly focus on passenger experience, festive initiatives like these highlight how small, well-planned surprises can make a big emotional impact
