Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru is set to become a premier aviation hub for southern India as Air India commits to developing a connecting hub at the airport. Amidst record-breaking passenger numbers for the just-completed financial year, the airline has inked an agreement with BLR aimed at bolstering air travel connectivity to and from India over the coming years.

Strategic Partnership for Aviation Growth

Air India’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, had previously expressed the airline’s interest in establishing a third connecting hub in southern India, alongside New Delhi and Mumbai. The agreement with BLR signifies a significant milestone in the Indian aviation sector, with plans to enhance international connectivity, operational efficiency, and passenger experience over the next five years.

Expanded Operations and Infrastructure Development

Under the agreement, Air India and Tata Group carriers will expand their operations at BLR, developing an enhanced network and establishing a dedicated domestic lounge for premium passengers. Additionally, Air India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the state of Karnataka to construct a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at BLR.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The MRO facility is projected to create over 1,200 new job opportunities for skilled individuals in Karnataka, further solidifying Air India’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Bengaluru and expanding its global footprint. CEO Campbell Wilson highlighted Bengaluru’s attractiveness as both an origin and destination market, emphasizing Air India’s plans for increased presence, expanded air connectivity, and the establishment of a major MRO center.

Record-Breaking Performance

Meanwhile, BLR reported a historic milestone in passenger traffic for the financial year ending March 31, handling 37.6 million passengers, marking an 18% increase year-over-year. Domestic traffic surged to 32.9 million passengers, up by 17%, while international traffic witnessed a notable 23% rise, totaling 4.7 million passengers.

Future Growth and Connectivity

With BLR currently connected to 108 destinations, including 80 domestic and 28 international, the airport continues to strengthen its position as a key aviation hub in India. Notable destinations include New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, and Doha, reflecting the airport’s robust domestic and international connectivity.
