Bengaluru: An alert driver averted a major mishap when a bus carrying 52 children for an excursion caught fire at Mudugere village in Channapatna Tehsil of Ramanagara district on Saturday.
The bus was heading towards Srirangapatna when the driver noticed smoke from the engine. Halting the bus, the driver immediately asked the children to vacate it. The bus was soon engulfed in flames before the fire brigade came, said police.
The fire mishap caused disruption of traffic on Bengaluru-Mysuru highway. The children affected by the mishap were sent in another bus.
As many as 300 students from a school in Bengaluru were on their way to Srirangapatna in six buses when tragedy struck one.
