A regular morning turned into a nightmare on May 1 in Bengaluru’s Wilson Garden after a high-speed ambulance ploughed through traffic on BTS Road around 8:30 am, killing one person and injuring six others. Chilling CCTV footage of the incident has since gone viral.
The vehicle, a Sanjeevini ambulance meant for emergency services, was reportedly being recklessly driven by 30-year-old Chiranjeevi. He allegedly lost control and rammed into two pushcarts, an auto-rickshaw, a scooter, and a pedestrian in the densely crowded area. The impact caused chaos and panic on the busy street.
Tragically, 49-year-old Ramesh, a local vendor, was killed instantly. The injured, including passersby and vehicle occupants, were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Eyewitnesses detained the driver at the scene, assaulted him in outrage, and handed him over to the police. During interrogation, Chiranjeevi claimed a brake failure led to the crash. Police have ruled out alcohol consumption, confirming he tested negative.
The Bengaluru Police stated that RTO officials and forensic experts are examining the ambulance to verify the mechanical failure claim. A formal case has been registered at the Wilson Garden Police Station, and further investigation is ongoing.
This tragedy has spotlighted serious lapses in the maintenance and oversight of emergency service vehicles in Bengaluru, demanding urgent attention.
