Bengaluru: In a tragic incident late on Saturday night, an ambulance — a vehicle meant to save lives — turned fatal when it lost control and rammed into multiple motorcycles stopped at a red signal near Richmond Circle in central Bengaluru. The crash claimed the lives of a couple on the spot and left two others seriously injured.

Accident occurred near Richmond Circle

According to police, the accident took place around 11:00 PM when several riders had halted their vehicles at the traffic signal. The speeding ambulance allegedly failed to slow down and crashed into them from behind, hitting at least three motorcycles in quick succession.

The force of the impact was severe, with one motorcycle being dragged for several metres before the ambulance came to a halt after colliding with a police outpost located at the junction.

Couple killed on the spot

The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old Ismail and his wife Sameen Banu, residents of Bengaluru. The couple was reportedly riding a Dio scooter when the ambulance rammed into their vehicle. Both suffered fatal injuries and died on the spot before medical help could arrive.

Two other motorcyclists sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Their condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.

Eyewitnesses recount horrific moments

Videos and eyewitness accounts from the scene show bystanders rushing to help the victims moments after the crash. Several people were seen attempting to lift the ambulance, which had struck the police outpost, to free trapped vehicles.

Debris from the damaged motorcycles and the front of the ambulance was scattered across the road. The police outpost’s wall and roof were also partially damaged in the impact.

Police investigation underway

Officials from the Wilson Garden Traffic Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. The area was cordoned off for inspection, and the damaged vehicles were towed away.

The ambulance driver, identified as Ashok, has been taken into custody. Police have registered an FIR and initiated an investigation to determine whether the driver was speeding, under the influence, or if there was a mechanical failure involved.

Focus on road safety and ambulance regulation

The incident has once again raised concerns about ambulance driving practices and the need for stricter safety oversight. While ambulances are granted priority on roads to save lives, reckless driving can have devastating consequences.

Traffic authorities said the investigation would also look into whether the ambulance was on an emergency call and if proper protocols were followed during its movement through the city’s central zone.

Conclusion

The fatal Richmond Circle crash has left Bengaluru residents shocked and saddened. The loss of Ismail and Sameen Banu has sparked fresh debate on the balance between emergency mobility and public safety. Police have assured a thorough probe and promised that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the tragedy.
