BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is on the verge of commissioning Asia’s largest water treatment plant at Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli) in Mandya district, 95 km from Bengaluru. The ambitious Cauvery V Stage project will significantly enhance the city’s water supply by providing Cauvery water to 110 villages on the city’s outskirts. The plant, designed to pump 775 MLD of potable water to Bengaluru, is expected to be inaugurated either before or after Independence Day.

The Rs 5,550-crore facility boasts a collective pumping capacity of 2,225 MLD and will be unique in its ability to pump water to a height of 920 meters over a 95 km stretch. The project is equipped with advanced Japanese machinery and French technology, tailored to meet the requirements of the Cauvery river’s water quality. Each of the high-capacity pumps can lift 150 MLD of water and operate at 3,500 HP.

BWSSB chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar stated that minor technical issues are being addressed and that either Chief Minister Siddaramaiah or Deputy CM DK Shivakumar will officiate the inauguration. The plant’s pipelines have been upgraded to handle the high water volume needed for densely populated areas.

Originally scheduled for completion in March 2023, the project faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent labor shortages. The revised deadline is set for August 2024, aligning with the resolution of various logistical and scheduling challenges.
