A 45-year-old mentally challenged woman from Bharath Nagar, West Bengaluru, has accused her neighbour of attempting to rape her while she was alone at home. Though medical tests ruled out rape, the police confirmed that there was a clear attempt to assault her sexually.

The incident occurred on May 8, but an FIR was filed only on May 10—after the woman’s son fought against initial police inaction and political pressure to suppress the case. The accused, Jayaram, 50, who lives in the same building, reportedly confessed to the assault but was initially let off with a warning, raising serious concerns about the handling of the case.

The case gained attention after the woman’s son returned from work and found his mother in distress, trembling and injured. She revealed that Jayaram had entered their home, disrobed her, undressed himself, and attempted to rape her. She suffered visible bruises on her chest, hips, and thighs, and was later treated at a private hospital.

The accused allegedly exploited the absence of the son and his wife to commit the crime, entering through an unlocked door. He pushed the woman onto a bed in the hall before the assault.

The victim’s son said police failed to take immediate action—no medical exam or evidence collection was done until he escalated the matter to senior officials. Only then did Byadarahalli police act, summoning Jayaram for further investigation.
