A man accused of breaking into residential quarters of factory workers in the Attibele area and attempting to target women late at night has been arrested after he was caught inside an 18-year-old woman’s home on Monday. Police believe he may be linked to multiple similar incidents in the locality.

Suspect caught by family after entering house at night

According to police, the accused, identified as N Vijay, a resident of Iggaluru and in his early thirties, allegedly entered the complainant’s house when the family was asleep. The woman and her family work at a plastic godown and stay in accommodation provided by their employer.

Around midnight, the complainant reportedly noticed a stranger entering the room. When she raised an alarm, her mother caught hold of the suspect while other family members sought help from their employer. The factory owner, along with workers, rushed to the spot and alerted the police, who detained the man.

Previous incident reported; police widen investigation

Police officials said that a similar incident involving another 18-year-old woman living next door was reported two months ago. Her statement is now being recorded as part of the investigation. Officers suspect there may be additional unreported cases, particularly because several workers in the area are migrants and may be reluctant to approach authorities.

An officer said they have reached out to residents and workers in nearby units, urging anyone who has faced similar attempts to contact the police. The official also said that the suspect’s alleged pattern involved entering homes late at night by manipulating door latches or using tools.

Case registered under relevant legal provisions

A case has been filed at the jurisdictional police station under sections related to trespass, harassment, and use of criminal force. Police emphasised that further sections may be added if more survivors come forward.

Investigators are verifying whether the accused has a past record or is linked to similar offences in neighbouring areas. Patrols have also been stepped up in industrial clusters around Attibele following repeated safety complaints from workers.

Community concerns and next steps

Residents working in godowns, garment units, small factories and packaging units in the region have expressed concern about security in employer-provided accommodation. Many live in shared rooms grouped closely together, with limited surveillance or controlled access.

Police said stronger lighting, reinforced door latches, and periodic night-rounds in worker settlements are being discussed with employers.

Conclusion

With the suspect now in custody, police are expanding the probe to ensure that any additional incidents are traced and addressed. Authorities have urged workers, particularly women living in employer-provided housing, to report any suspicious activity promptly so preventive measures can be put in place.
