A video of a heated altercation between a Bengaluru auto driver and a woman commuter has gone viral, sparking renewed discussions around linguistic tensions, rider safety, and fare transparency in the city. Shared by Instagram user Anya S, the clip shows the driver yelling aggressively in Kannada, demanding ₹390 for a ride Anya says was quoted at ₹296 on her Rapido app.
The confrontation escalated when Anya, speaking calmly, refused to pay more than the app-stated fare. Visibly shaken, she called for help, saying she felt unsafe. The driver, however, insisted she speak Kannada, further intensifying the dispute.
In her caption, Anya clarified that she is not opposed to learning the local language, but questioned why effort should be one-sided when basic courtesy is lacking. She described the behavior as not just linguistic bias, but intimidation, entitlement, and disrespect. “I often tip drivers,” she added, “but not when I’m bullied.”
Rapido responded promptly, stating that the driver has been permanently removed from their platform and that stricter captain conduct measures are underway.
The incident triggered a wide range of reactions. While some Kannadigas condemned the behavior, apologizing and suggesting safer alternatives like Yulu bikes and metro services, others emphasized that such aggression doesn’t reflect true Kannada culture, noting even locals face similar issues.
