Following recent increases in bus and metro fares, Bengaluru’s auto-rickshaw rides are also expected to become more expensive. Auto unions have agreed to raise the base fare by ₹10, setting the minimum charge at ₹40 for the first 2 km and ₹20 per additional km. Earlier, the fare stood at ₹30 for 1.9 km, with ₹15 per extra km.
This marks the third major auto fare revision in a decade. The last change in November 2021 set the base fare at ₹30, while the previous revision occurred in 2013. Auto unions have long demanded a fare hike, citing increased fuel and maintenance expenses.
A meeting chaired by a senior traffic official brought together 15 auto unions and transport authorities to discuss the fare revision. The proposal is now under review by the District Transport Authority (DTA), which is responsible for setting city auto fares. The DTA comprises urban administration officials, RTO members, and driver union representatives.
A five-member committee has been appointed to evaluate the fare proposal, considering factors such as passenger demand, traffic congestion, and financial feasibility. While many unions support the hike, some remain opposed. The final decision will be made in an upcoming RTA meeting.
