Bengaluru: When a patient gets an epileptic attack, many don’t come forward to help them. One of the main reasons for not helping epilepsy patients is lack of awareness. Hence, Sagar Hospitals took up an innovative initiative on Thursday, Feb 15 to create awareness and dispell misconceptions about the epilepsy.
Well-known Sandalwood actor Gurunandan (of First Rank Raju fame) unveiled the theme-‘Life is Beautiful’ where hundreds of school students joined the campaign with a pledge to help epilepsy patients.
Speaking on the occasion, Gurunandan said that most young people felt that there was a huge lack of awareness about epilepsy. The general ignorance about epilepsy sometimes explained why people don’t know how to behave or react. “As many people feel that ignorance can cause fear and if people knew more about epilepsy, they could deal with it better, I feel that the Sagar Hospital’s initiative of organising the Epilepsy Day is a step in the right direction”, he said.
Sagar Hospitals’ Medical director Lt. Col. Dr. MR Chandrashekar said that there were a lot of superstitions and wrong notions in the minds of people related to epilepsy. “We wanted to tell the people that epilepsy is eminently treatable and curable only if the people are educated about the problem. This was the main reason for the organisation of the Epilepsy Day,” he said. The students who had gathered in huge numbers said that the Epilepsy Day was a day for everyone; no matter where you are, no matter how small your group or large your area, no matter whether the focus is on the medical or the social aspects of the disease. “We are here to celebrate International Epilepsy Day! Let’s speak with one global voice,” the students said.
