Bengaluru: Hit with a financial crisis in terms of a drop-in footfall caused by the Covid-triggered lockdown, the Bengaluru Zoo is appealing to the public to adopt and name animals as well as donate to help generate funds.

Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) is a 731.88-hectare zoo with four separate units: Zoo, Safari, Butterfly Park, and Rescue Centre.

BBP is a self-sustaining organisation that relies solely on gate money; it has also adopted a few Karnataka mini zoos.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has caused havoc on the zoo, causing footfall to drop and revenue to suffer,” said R Gokul, Bengaluru’s Chief Conservator of Forests and In-charge Executive Director of BBP.

Despite this, he claimed, the zoo was caring for 2,388 animals belonging 102 different species.

“As a result, we ask residents and organisations to adopt animals and pay to their feed and veterinary care costs,” Gokul explained.

BBP also gives people the chance to name their young animals.

Lioness Sania’s one male and three female cubs, Hippopotamus Dashya’s male calf, Spectacled Langur Reshmi’s female infant, Hanuman Langur Adithi’s infant, and Grey Wolf Akira’s two male puppies are among the recently born ones available for adoption and naming.

Citizens can also donate to the cost of one day’s feeding for some of the zoo’s residents, according to Gokul.
