Babasaheb in Bengaluru – A Short Documentary Exploring Ambedkar Statues in the City

A short experimental documentary directed by Mahishaa of Neelavarana, an Ambedkarite forum based in Bengaluru, will be screened this Sunday. Titled Babasaheb in Bengaluru, the documentary is the only Kannada film featured at the 12th International Festival of Moving Image Art by Experimenta.

The 4-minute and 41-second film had its premiere in Berlin in August at the anti-caste event “Disrupting Protected Ignorance” at the House of World Cultures (HKW). Mahishaa explains that the documentary also functions as a video installation. The central theme of the film is to explore the significance behind the various statues of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar scattered across Bengaluru. Mahishaa delves into questions like whether these statues represent idol worship or something deeper, providing an insightful reflection on Ambedkar’s legacy and the city’s cultural landscape.
