After years of delay, Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has finally moved to construct a long-overdue pedestrian skywalk at the chaotic Banashankari Junction in South Bengaluru.
The upcoming skywalk will link the Banashankari Metro station with the adjacent Traffic and Transit Management Centre (TTMC), easing the risky road crossing commuters currently face. Construction is slated to begin by the year’s end and is projected to take 15 months to finish.
Designed as Bengaluru’s first-ever circular skywalk, the structure will feature landscaping at both the road and skywalk levels, resting pods, and commercial outlets. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has already invited tenders for the project.
This project, stuck for years due to funding and jurisdiction tussles between BMRCL and the BBMP, got fresh momentum after Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya lobbied for its approval. The BBMP is funding the entire project while BMRCL will oversee its execution.
Key features will include aesthetic design, disabled-friendly access with ramps and lifts, and space for cafes to generate revenue.
Public transport advocates have praised the move, though they pointed out the skywalk should have been built when the metro station opened back in 2017.
Spanning 280 metres with a width of 6 metres, the project is estimated to cost between ₹40–45 crore. Completion is expected by the second half of 2027.
