Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar has declared that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) Reverse Osmosis (RO) water dispensing units will soon be placed under the supervision of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). This transition aims to enhance efficiency in water supply and prevent administrative hurdles between the two governing bodies, particularly during peak summer when shortages arise.

A ground report uncovered that while several RO units function round the clock, offering clean drinking water at an affordable rate, numerous others suffer from irregular operations and neglect. Many machines remain non-operational, compelling residents to purchase expensive water from private vendors. Some active units have also increased prices, citing higher electricity expenses.

Localities such as Jayanagar, Fraser Town, and Ganganagar continue to benefit from well-maintained RO plants serving hundreds daily. However, other areas like Shivajinagar and Hennur face frequent shutdowns, adding to citizens’ hardships. Residents in several neighborhoods are left scouting for alternatives due to unreliable service.

BWSSB officials have initiated discussions with BBMP to compile a comprehensive list of operational and defunct units. Once data collection is completed, the board will devise strategies to streamline water dispensing services, ensuring greater accessibility for the public.
