Bengaluru: In just four months (from June and September), the BBMP collected a whopping Rs12.13 crores in fines from those who failed to install a rainwater harvesting system at their residential buildings/apartments.
As per the civic body’s order, all houses built above the 30×40 site shall install a rainwater harvesting system. However, every month, over 50,000 households are penalised for failing to comply with the order.
If these households fail to comply with the rule after three months after they are fined, 100% of the water and drainage connection will be levied every month.
According to BWSSB chief engineer Shivaprasad, if the house owners continue to neglect the order, stern action will be initiated against them.
According to an estimation, if all households and commercial buildings implement the rainwater harvesting rule, 15 TMCs of water can be saved, which is the annual water requirement of the entire city.
