Bengaluru: In the wake of a tragic incident involving the murder of a woman in a Bengaluru paying guest (PG) accommodation, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has implemented stringent new guidelines for the issuance and renewal of trade licenses for PG facilities within its jurisdiction.

Under the BBMP Act 2020, all PG accommodations must now comply with a set of mandatory norms to obtain or renew their trade licenses. Key requirements include the installation of CCTV surveillance covering all entry and exit points, as well as corridors, with a mandate to store footage for a minimum of 90 days.

In addition to surveillance measures, the guidelines stipulate that each occupant must be provided with a minimum of 70 square feet of personal space. PG facilities are also required to maintain hygienic washrooms, supply adequate drinking water, and ensure the presence of a 24/7 security guard on the premises.

Before a license can be granted, PG accommodations must obtain fire safety clearance and display emergency helpline numbers prominently. Furthermore, they must adhere to solid waste segregation protocols for waste disposal.

These measures come in response to a shocking incident on July 23, when a 24-year-old woman was brutally murdered in her PG accommodation. CCTV footage from the scene revealed the horrifying attack, prompting urgent action from local authorities to enhance safety and security measures in PG facilities across the city.

By enforcing these guidelines, the BBMP aims to create a safer environment for all residents of PG accommodations, ensuring that such tragic incidents do not occur again.
