Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has imposed a penalty of ₹50,000 on contractor V Vasu for failing to ensure adequate upkeep of a stormwater drain located near Kanteerava Stadium. The drain falls under the jurisdiction of the Koramangala Valley division.
Officials from BBMP revealed that the contractor, who is responsible for routine maintenance under the guidance of the executive engineer for the division, neglected his duties, resulting in inconvenience to the public and potential drainage hazards during rains.
The fine was issued as a first-level disciplinary action under clauses 41(1) and 41(2) of the maintenance contract. These clauses clearly outline the obligations regarding the year-round care and cleanliness of stormwater channels managed by the contractor.
BBMP sources mentioned that this financial penalty is just the beginning. If the contractor fails to rectify the issue or continues to violate the maintenance terms, stricter measures may be initiated, including escalation of fines or possible blacklisting.
Residents and commuters in the vicinity had reportedly expressed concerns about the unattended drain, especially during the recent showers when waterlogging became a common issue.
This action by BBMP is seen as part of a broader attempt to enforce accountability among contractors handling civic infrastructure, especially those involved in critical urban systems like stormwater management. Officials emphasized that such enforcement ensures better city preparedness during the monsoon.
