August 21, 2024 – The forest division of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has been actively engaged in identifying and removing weak trees and branches to prevent accidents during heavy rains. Between August 1 and August 17, 756 branches and 250 trees were cut down based on citizen complaints and a recent survey conducted by the forest department.

Key Actions Taken:

  • Tree and Branch Removal: The initiative aimed to mitigate risks associated with weak trees and branches, which could pose a danger during heavy rain. During the same period, 92 branches and 53 trees fell due to the rains.
  • Preventative Measures: BLG Swamy, Deputy Conservator of Forests, BBMP, emphasized the importance of removing dry and weakened trees to avoid accidents. The focus is currently on planting saplings and caring for them during the rainy season. After the season, attention will shift to maintaining these saplings for the next three years.
  • Accident Compensation: Following a recent incident where an autorickshaw driver was killed by a falling tree, BBMP has covered his medical expenses and provided Rs 5 lakh in compensation to his family.

This proactive approach by BBMP aims to enhance safety and prevent accidents related to falling trees and branches during the monsoon season.
