BBMP halts audit of conservancy workers

Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP’s) plan to conduct a third-party audit of all conservancy workers has been derailed almost as soon as it took off.

The survey, which began on Sunday, was supposed to remove out bogus names on the list of garbage contractors. However, on Monday, the BBMP withdrew the order, thereby cancelling the exercise.

Sources said the BBMP was forced to call off the audit allegedly due to pressure from corporators.

“The corporators wanted the decision to carry out an audit to be placed for discussion in the BBMP Council. Many claimed this was a policy decision that was taken without consulting them. Some criticised the decision to involve members of resident welfare associations (RWAs),” a source said.

As per BBMP records, there are around 32,000 conservancy workers, of which around 8,000 are autorickshaw drivers and helpers, and around 500 are supervisors. However, there have been allegations that contractors use outdated employee lists with bogus names to inflate bills.
