Bengaluru’s BBMP has initiated an inquiry into suspected financial misconduct in solid waste management (SWM) expenses in Gandhinagar assembly constituency. Reports suggest that the monthly SWM expenditure per ward in Gandhinagar is ₹37 lakh, whereas in 26 other constituencies, it is merely ₹15 lakh, sparking concerns over misuse of public funds.

As per BBMP norms, SWM activities should be carried out only during the morning shift. However, influential individuals allegedly forged work orders for extra shifts, enabling them to pocket large sums without executing any additional duties. Senior Palike officials are suspected of turning a blind eye to the malpractice, approving fake invoices from contractors and illegally disbursing funds on a regular basis.

Taking serious note of the discrepancies, BBMP Chief Commissioner has assigned Special Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishore to oversee a thorough investigation. His responsibilities include verifying whether multiple SWM shifts are actually conducted, scrutinizing financial records, reviewing tender processes, and identifying officials involved in fraudulent payments. Additionally, he will probe potential collusion between contractors and civic authorities.

The investigating officer has been granted the authority to recruit additional personnel for assistance. A comprehensive report must be submitted within a week, and any officials found guilty will face strict legal action. BBMP has urged complete cooperation from all departments.
