BBMP Leverages AI to Boost Bengaluru’s Green Cover
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified nearly 150 locations across Bengaluru for a large-scale afforestation initiative. Using an AI-driven tool called Mapathon, launched in May 2023, the civic body aims to plant over 20,000 native and medicinal saplings.
How Locations Were Chosen
Mapathon employs satellite imagery and spatial mapping to pinpoint vacant land suitable for planting. Once locations are identified, on-ground verification is conducted with the help of volunteers and citizen participation. Deputy Conservator of Forests, B.L.G. Swamy, stated, “The goal is to create a land bank for compensatory afforestation, ensuring the right locations for successful growth.”
For government-owned sites, BBMP directly undertakes planting efforts. If a suitable location is on private property, the civic body collaborates with owners, assuring that trees will be removed when the land is needed in the future. Citizens can also contribute by using the Tree Census dashboard to suggest planting spots.
Sapling Selection for Higher Survival Rates
To enhance survival rates, BBMP focuses on planting mature native and medicinal saplings. These are cultivated in airbags for six to seven years to ensure they can withstand harsh conditions. “We avoid planting soft, immature saplings to ensure their better survival,” explained a Forest Department official.
This initiative is part of the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell’s commitment to enhancing the city’s greenery through sustainable methods.
