In a decisive move against unauthorized commercial use of space, BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao has instructed officials to issue notices to building owners who have illegally set up shops in basement areas. Emphasizing that basements are strictly meant for parking, Rao warned that legal action will follow in all cases of misuse.
The directive came during a review meeting with officials from Mahadevapura zone, where Rao also addressed broader urban development issues. He called for a comprehensive lake development plan for each of the 52 lakes in the zone, focusing on removal of encroachments, restoration of buffer zones, and upgrading stormwater drains.
To ensure smoother civic operations, Rao announced the formation of a coordination committee under the joint commissioner, tasked with overseeing project timelines and providing regular progress updates.
Key infrastructure projects such as the Hoodi Junction underpass and Panathur S-Cross road widening were also discussed. Rao urged officials to resolve Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) issues through negotiations with property owners to avoid project delays.
He further directed teams to enhance flood prevention measures and ensure cleanliness of drains, especially in areas prone to waterlogging during heavy rains.
The multi-pronged directives are aimed at restoring zoning discipline, tackling illegal constructions, and expediting critical urban development works, particularly in rapidly growing zones like Mahadevapura.
