Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a major redevelopment project for the 7.5-km stormwater drain (SWD) stretching from Hebbal to Hennur, which runs parallel to the Outer Ring Road (ORR). This initiative is part of the ‘Janara Kaluve’ (citizens drain) project, inspired by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

Key Aspects of the Project:

  • Property Acquisition: BBMP plans to acquire private properties within a 50-metre radius of the SWD for public use.
  • Infrastructure Development: The project will include a two-lane, partly-elevated road along with a service lane designed for walkers and cyclists.
  • Beautification and Amenities: The redevelopment will feature new amenities such as entry plazas, pavilions, wetland boardwalks, pedestrian crossings, kids’ play areas, community centers, recreational parks, and multipurpose grounds.
  • Flood Resilience: The plan includes measures to enhance flood resilience and prevent encroachments.

Details:

  • Buffer Zone: The 50-metre buffer zone covers 191 acres, with about 6.1 acres earmarked for public facilities. Elevated corridors will be constructed in areas with limited land availability.
  • Historical Issues: The section between Nagawara and Veeranapalya has had issues with overflowing, prompting the need for this comprehensive overhaul.
  • Ongoing Projects: The BBMP is also completing the Koramangala valley project and is awaiting the removal of unauthorized sewage inlets.

Financial Allocation:

  • Budget: The BBMP has allocated Rs 100 crore in its 2024-25 budget for improvements to the SWD buffer zones.

The redevelopment work is set to begin on September 8, aiming to improve both flood management and public amenities along this crucial stretch of stormwater infrastructure.
