Bengaluru: The determined staff at the Bannerghatta Biological Park have managed to rear two lion cubs, in order to ensure their survival.
The cubs are part of a litter of four, one of which was eaten by the mother just after birth and another of which died at the zoo’s veterinary hospital. Knowing that the mother, Sana (8) had a history of eating her offspring, the staff decided to intervene.
The cubs were born on April 24 to Sana and Shankar (6). Soon after she gave birth, Sana ate one of her cubs and the zoo staff immediately separated her from her cubs. The surviving cubs were taken to the zoo’s veterinary hospital, where another cub died. Determined to save the remaining cubs, the staff spared no efforts and even brought two goats in order to have a good supply of milk for the cubs.
The cubs, both female, were hand-reared by the doctors and staff at the zoo hospital where they were fed goat’s milk and nutritional supplements. The cubs are now three-months-old and are fed a normal diet.
