Bellandur Lake foams again as pollution woes rise with the rains
Toxic white froth has once more blanketed Bellandur Lake, stirring up anxiety among nearby residents. Once a national symbol of Bengaluru’s lake pollution crisis, the lake is again in the spotlight as foam clouds drift into homes and streets, a clear indication that sewage and industrial waste continue to pollute the water body.
The problem resurfaced following recent heavy rainfall, which triggered runoff and increased the lake’s water levels. Experts say this turbulence agitates the lake’s sludge-rich bottom, a mix of decomposed organic matter and pollutants. When mixed with untreated effluents, this forms foam laden with bacteria and chemicals, shooting up to 25 feet high and blown into surrounding neighborhoods.
Communities in Bellandur, Kariamma Agrahara, Yamalur, Kempapura, Chalaghatta, and nearby localities are once again grappling with respiratory distress, skin irritations, and an overwhelming stench. “We’ve been facing this for years. No solution, only suffering,” said Ramanna, a long-time resident.
The foam’s return has revived fears about public health. Despite past assurances and clean-up promises, residents say no permanent action has been taken. Calls are now growing louder for immediate intervention by the state government and civic bodies.
Bellandur Lake remains a stark reminder of the city’s fragile environmental balance—and the urgent need for sustainable wastewater management.
