Bengaluru Airport launches India's testing vehicle for safe takeoff and landings

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has introduced an indigenous friction testing vehicle based on the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV, reinforcing its commitment to safe air operations. These specialized vehicles assess runway grip levels, ensuring safe takeoffs and landings, especially in adverse weather.

Traditionally, friction testing was conducted using dedicated cars like the Saab 9-5. The adoption of the C5 Aircross highlights its resilience and suitability for this critical role. The vehicle has been outfitted with advanced tools to measure tarmac traction, making it a vital asset in airport safety protocols.

To replicate wet runway conditions, a specialized nozzle system evenly disperses a fine 1mm water layer from a 700-litre onboard tank. Additionally, the SUV is equipped with sensors and thermal monitoring devices to track surface temperature, all integrated within its spacious cabin without hindering functionality.

This move sets a new standard for Indian airports, proving that locally adapted automotive platforms can deliver efficient and cost-effective safety solutions. Bengaluru Airport’s initiative could pave the way for other aviation hubs to follow suit, leveraging existing vehicles for critical operational tasks.
