The BBMP’s AI-driven tool, Mapathon, is proving instrumental in restoring Bengaluru’s greenery. A successful trial in Bommanahalli zone has already resulted in the planting of 8,000 saplings, with many more potential plantation sites being identified citywide.
“We have planted 8,000 saplings in Bommanahalli, and following this success, we plan to expand across the city. The Forest Department is receiving numerous location suggestions from citizens, and we have a decent land bank ready,” said BLG Swamy, Deputy Conservator of Forest, BBMP. Officials estimate that at least 50,000 more saplings will be planted this year.
Tree activists stress the need to prioritize native species for sustainable afforestation. “Though slower-growing, native trees support biodiversity. With summer ahead, sapling maintenance must be strengthened to ensure survival,” an environmentalist pointed out.
Launched in May 2023 to meet compensatory afforestation goals, Mapathon enables citizens to mark open spaces for potential tree planting. The Forest Department evaluates these spots before proceeding. Government-owned spaces receive immediate plantation efforts, while private landowners are approached for collaboration.
This initiative, under the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell, is a crucial step in rebuilding the city’s vanishing green cover.
