Bengaluru Bids Farewell to Orthopaedic Pioneer Dr Thomas Chandy
Bengaluru– Dr Thomas Chandy, a trailblazer in orthopaedic surgery and the driving force behind HOSMAT Hospital, passed away on Monday night at the age of 75. He had been battling interstitial lung disease, a progressive condition that led to a lung transplant at Manipal Hospital. His health had been deteriorating over the last three months.
Dr Chandy’s career was marked by his commitment to medical innovation, from embracing robotic surgeries to supporting drone transport of tissue samples in collaboration with ICMR. As HOSMAT’s founder and chief of orthopaedics, he earned immense respect for blending technology with compassionate care.
Born in Bengaluru, the youngest of eight siblings, he credited the city’s diverse culture and education for shaping him. “I learned English from Anglo-Indian teachers at St German’s High School,” he once recalled.
Dr Chandy completed his postgraduate studies in orthopaedic surgery at Jewish Hospital and Medical Centre in Brooklyn, New York, and served as chief of orthopaedics at Claremore Regional Hospital in Oklahoma for ten years before returning home to establish HOSMAT.
Beyond medicine, he was also a gifted jazz musician, often playing music during surgeries to ease tension. As the founder of the band The Jazz and Rock Revival, he performed at various cultural events, delighting audiences with his passion.
He also held leadership roles as president of the Bangalore Orthopaedic Society and Bangalore Club, earning admiration in both medical and social circles.
