As Bengaluru steps into peak summer, the city is expected to witness more frequent summer showers this year compared to previous seasons, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
This increase is attributed to enhanced convectional rainfall—a weather pattern caused by rising warm, moist air that cools and condenses, resulting in cloud formation and precipitation. IMD officials note that unlike the extended dry spells of last year, Karnataka is now experiencing a notable surge in pre-monsoon rainfall.
“Due to this phenomenon, Bengaluru is seeing more summer rains this year,” confirmed N Puviarasan, head of the Bengaluru Meteorological Centre.
The IMD forecasts light to moderate thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, between Tuesday and Friday. Daytime temperatures are expected to fluctuate between 34°C and 23°C.
Authorities have issued a weather advisory for residents, urging caution during intense showers. Citizens are advised to stay indoors, avoid standing under trees during storms, and keep windows and doors closed. Falling trees during heavy winds—a frequent hazard in the city—have caused injuries and fatalities in past incidents.
Elsewhere in Karnataka, the IMD has warned that above-average temperatures could harm banana and papaya plantations, with strong winds threatening standing crops in north interior districts.
While the showers may provide relief from scorching heat, Bengaluru residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during the ongoing pre-monsoon season.
