Bengaluru: Central Municipal Corporation steps up sanitation measures

Hitting the city roads at 6 am on Saturday, Bengaluru Central Municipal Corporation Commissioner Rajendra Cholan conducted a thorough inspection of sanitation measures in and around the bustling commercial and transportation hub of Majestic. The visit aimed to assess the effectiveness of cleaning operations and ensure that public hygiene standards were being maintained in one of the busiest areas of the city.

Mobile toilets to prevent public urination

During his inspection at the Auto Tipper Mustering Centre, situated in front of the Slum Development Board, the commissioner expressed concern over the foul odour emanating from the Majestic bus stop and surrounding areas. To curb public urination and improve hygiene, Cholan instructed officials to arrange mobile toilets at strategic locations in the vicinity.

He further emphasised that municipal auto drivers and sanitation staff must wear proper clothing, shoes, and safety equipment while on duty. With garbage blackspots and waste dumping continuing to be pressing issues across Bengaluru, the commissioner called for a robust reporting system to identify and remove construction debris and other waste materials. He directed officials to supervise these operations closely and take strict action against violations.

Daily cleaning and upkeep of key junctions

Cholan highlighted the need for intensive cleaning at critical locations, particularly at junctions like Okalipuram. He instructed authorities to remove construction debris from Dhanvantari Road, located opposite the railway area, and to replace damaged curbstones and footpath slabs. He underscored the importance of effective cleaning routines in areas with high pedestrian traffic, especially around hotels and commercial establishments.

The commissioner also issued directives to ensure that dustbins are placed in front of all shops. Shop owners who fail to comply are liable to be fined. Cholan stressed that citizens and business owners must cooperate with municipal authorities to maintain a clean environment.

Measures to improve infrastructure and prevent flooding

In addition to sanitation, Cholan emphasised the need for infrastructural improvements across Bengaluru. He directed the horticulture department to plant saplings at small junctions, maintain them, and install tree guards. To tackle road flooding during monsoon seasons, he instructed officials to regularly clean stormwater gratings and remove silt from side drains.

He also advised civic officials to issue notices to agencies such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) whenever materials or waste are placed on footpaths, obstructing pedestrian movement.

Inspection of Binny Mill Tank Bund Road

As part of the inspection, Cholan visited the Binny Mill Tank Bund Road area to review ongoing cleaning operations and to address encroachment issues. He directed officials to clear footpaths in front of the police station, ensuring safe passage for pedestrians. Chief Engineer Vijay Kumar Haridas, the executive engineer, and several other officials accompanied the commissioner during the inspection.

With these measures, Bengaluru Central Municipal Corporation aims to improve cleanliness, reduce public health risks, and enhance the overall civic experience for residents and visitors in key areas of the city.
