Scams involving auto drivers and cabbies in Bengaluru are becoming alarmingly frequent. Reports of fraudulent practices like displaying fake fare screenshots, deliberately taking longer routes, and exploiting passengers with emotional stories are on the rise, leaving commuters wary.

One recent incident highlights a Rapido cab scam that a Bengaluru man narrowly avoided. Sharing his experience online, he recounted how a driver attempted to con him by claiming technical issues with the app and demanding payment outside the platform. The passenger, suspecting foul play, insisted on app-based payment, eventually forcing the driver to comply.

This example is just one of many. Fake QR codes, tampered meters, and fabricated ride fares are also common tricks used to exploit unsuspecting passengers. Some drivers go as far as recounting fabricated sob stories to evoke sympathy and extract additional money from passengers.

How to Avoid Falling for These Scams

  • Always Pay Through the App: Avoid paying drivers directly, especially if they claim app malfunctions.
  • Track Routes: Use GPS to monitor your journey and ensure drivers follow the shortest or suggested route.
  • Verify Fares: Confirm fare details within the app and avoid trusting screenshots.
  • Be Cautious of Stories: Treat emotional appeals with skepticism to avoid manipulation.
  • Report Misconduct: Notify the platform or local authorities of any suspicious activity.

While not all drivers engage in these practices, vigilance and awareness can safeguard commuters from scams.
