A Bengaluru police constable, Kiran, was suspended on Monday for allegedly misbehaving with a woman during a passport verification at her home. The action followed a complaint filed by the woman with Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), S Girish. After a preliminary inquiry, misconduct was confirmed, leading to the suspension of the constable from his post at the Byatarayanapura police station.
The incident began when a 22-year-old woman, employed at an IT firm, applied for a passport for a job opportunity abroad. As part of the verification process, Kiran visited her residence. During his visits, he discovered that her elder brother was involved in a murder case and had a rowdy sheet against him. Over the next two weeks, Kiran allegedly warned that her brother’s criminal record might lead to the rejection of her passport application.
However, the situation escalated as Kiran allegedly made inappropriate advances, including shutting the door, sitting too close to the woman, and asking her to sit beside him. On his final visit, he even requested a hug, assuming the woman was alone. When her brother confronted him, Kiran claimed it was a misunderstanding.
A senior officer clarified that the woman’s brother’s criminal history does not affect her eligibility for a passport as long as her own record is clean. The Bengaluru Police have urged individuals to report any misconduct or bribery demands during passport verifications.
