Bengaluru Cop Booked for Dowry Harassment, Assaulting Wife
Bengaluru: A 31-year-old police constable from Seshadripuram station has been charged with harassing and physically assaulting his wife over dowry demands.
The accused, Manoj, allegedly subjected his wife to mental and physical abuse and even pressured her for a divorce, according to the FIR. The woman, a widow with two daughters, first met Manoj at the police station while seeking assistance. Over time, he gained her trust and proposed marriage.
The couple tied the knot in Nanjanagudu in August 2024 and officially registered their marriage in November. However, after the wedding, Manoj’s sisters allegedly created chaos at their home, and he frequently picked fights, claiming his parents disapproved of the marriage.
As per the FIR, Manoj resented marrying a widow and believed he could have received a dowry had he chosen someone else. The situation escalated when he began physically assaulting her. Suspicious of his behavior, the woman checked his phone and discovered pictures with another woman, exposing his extramarital affair. When Manoj found out, he allegedly twisted her hand, causing injury.
Unable to endure the abuse, the woman filed a complaint on January 29. The High Grounds police have booked Manoj and his relatives under the Dowry Prohibition Act and relevant sections of the BNS for domestic violence and cruelty.
