In a significant move to strengthen road safety, particularly for children, the Bengaluru Traffic Police launched a surprise drive on Monday morning to identify school vehicle drivers under the influence of alcohol. Conducted between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM, the city-wide operation tested a total of 4,559 drivers, out of which 58 were found to have consumed alcohol.
These drivers, who were operating school buses and vans, were immediately booked under the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act. Police swiftly seized the vehicles involved and recommended cancellation of their permits to the concerned Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). The offenders’ driving licences have also been forwarded to RTOs for suspension.
In an official statement, the Bengaluru Police emphasized that the initiative is part of an ongoing campaign to improve safety on city roads, especially for school-going children. “Vehicles found being operated under the influence of alcohol have been confiscated, and permit cancellations have been recommended. Similar enforcement drives will continue,” the statement noted.
The crackdown follows rising concerns over the condition of school transport services in the city. There have been multiple complaints from both parents and school managements about reckless driving and violations by school bus drivers.
Officials also highlighted that these surprise checks will be conducted regularly, and any violations will result in immediate and strict action, including licence cancellation.
The drive serves as a warning and reminder that child safety cannot be compromised under any circumstance.
