More disturbing details have emerged in the Bengaluru pet dog attack case that left a 31-year-old woman with severe facial and neck injuries, highlighting the lasting physical and psychological impact of negligent pet ownership.

The victim, Shalini Kumari Dubey, a software professional and mother of a 17-month-old child, was attacked during her routine morning walk in Teachers’ Colony, HSR Layout. CCTV footage shows a neighbour’s pet rottweiler lunging at her within seconds of the gate being opened, with no leash or muzzle in place.

Eight-hour surgery and life-altering injuries

Shalini underwent nearly eight hours of emergency surgery and received over 80 stitches across her face, throat, and head. One deep wound narrowly missed her airway. Doctors have warned the family that some scars may be permanent.

While her condition is now stable, the emotional toll remains severe. According to her family, Shalini is experiencing anxiety, recurring flashbacks, and sleep disturbances, and has begun consulting a clinical psychologist.

Child affected as mother recovers

Her husband, Satya Prakash Dubey, said the incident has deeply affected their young child. With Shalini hospitalised, the toddler is being cared for by grandparents, has lost close to one kilogram in weight, and has been unable to breastfeed since the attack.

“What troubles her most is not her own pain but her child,” Dubey said, adding that the toddler cries at night calling for his mother.

FIR filed, probe underway

Following the hospital’s medico-legal report, Bengaluru Police registered an FIR against the dog’s owner for negligence. A legal notice has been issued, and the investigation is ongoing.

“This is not about dogs versus humans. This is about irresponsible ownership,” Dubey said, calling for stricter enforcement of pet safety rules to prevent similar tragedies.
