In honor of Alcohol Awareness Month (April), an inspiring painting exhibition in Bengaluru is spotlighting the transformative power of art in recovery. Titled Humanizing Recovery, the show features the works of four talented individuals who have turned to art as part of their healing journey from alcoholism.
The exhibit includes the contributions of graphic designer Muralidhar Cherukuri, visual arts facilitator Sachin Raj, award-winning artist N D R Gnana Vetri Velu, and designer Pete Mostly. Velu, a former student of the legendary Yusuf Arakkal, has murals displayed in prestigious locations like star hotels and government buildings. The 20 pieces on display explore themes of resilience, hope, and personal transformation, with prices ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 45,000.
Pete, whose childhood struggles led him to alcohol, uses his paintings to depict the chaos of addiction and his journey to reclaim control. One of his works, featuring a devilish head atop another, symbolizes alcoholism’s grip on his life. Raj, contributing eight pieces, reflects on the importance of each artwork as a moment to cherish and hold on to.
Perry Menzies, the owner of Urban Solace, where the exhibition is held, shared that the idea originated from a talk on alcoholism, evolving into a show that highlights the healing potential of art therapy. The exhibition is on view until April 30, with an expert talk on alcohol addiction and recovery scheduled for Saturday at 7 pm.
