Over 5,300 auto tippers and 700 garbage trucks will be off the roads starting Wednesday evening as drivers and cleaners protest against the BBMP Solid Waste Management wing, demanding permanent employment.
Hundreds of workers gathered at the BBMP head office, urging the implementation of the IPD Salappa report and direct employment under BBMP instead of contractor-based hiring. Though police detained them as a precautionary measure, they were later released.
Thyagraj, president of Karmikara Samrakshane Organisation, warned that the full impact of the strike would be visible from Thursday, bringing garbage collection to a halt. He emphasized that workers have been overlooked and deserve regularized employment.
Activist Kathyayini Chamraj supported the protest, highlighting the dire working conditions of sanitation staff. She warned that if the strike continues for three days, garbage accumulation could choke the city.
