Starting Wednesday evening, 5,300 auto tippers and 700 garbage trucks in Bengaluru have halted operations as sanitation workers launched an indefinite strike. The protest, aimed at the BBMP Solid Waste Management department, demands permanent employment for drivers handling solid waste, citing the IPD Salappa report.
Hundreds of workers gathered at the BBMP head office, leading to preventive detentions by the police, though they were released later. Thyagraj, president of the Karmikara Samrakshane Organisation, stated that authorities blocked over 500 protesters from entering the office.
With no resolution in sight, garbage collection across Bengaluru is expected to suffer severely from Thursday onwards. Residents are bracing for potential sanitation issues as waste management services remain disrupted.
