Bengaluru: The Cabinet Sub-Committee has directed the Law Department to submit its opinion on the amendment to the law relating to the allotment of land to eligible people who have been cultivating land for decades in Kumki, Kane, Bane, and Soppina Betta.

Speaking after a meeting at Vidhana Soudha here on Tuesday October 11, Revenue Minister R. Ashoka said that poor farmers of the age group between 60 to 70 years have been cultivating Government land and forest areas across the State, including Malnad. Though the courts have declared it as a forest area, arecanut and coconut trees have been grown there. It has been decided in consultation with the Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to allot land to those who have been cultivating the land for decades. For this, the law needs to be amended and it has been suggested to review and give an opinion, he said.

The cultivators will not be allowed to apply afresh. Those who have already applied and rejected, the applications will be considered and sanctioned to the eligible ones. Lakhs of acres of land across the State have been cultivated in this manner and it has been decided to help the poor farmers, he said. A cabinet sub-committee was constituted to formulate a policy regarding allotment of government land in Gomala, Gayarana, Hullubanni, Soppinabetta and other rural areas, he noted.
