Bengaluru: The city is experiencing a sharp rise in temperatures, with the mercury climbing more than 2°C above normal levels this week, prompting health advisories from authorities even as rainfall is expected to bring some relief from April 11.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature at the city’s base weather station touched 35.2°C on Wednesday, about 2.2°C above normal. At HAL airport, temperatures reached 35°C, while Kempegowda International Airport recorded similar levels.

Highest temperatures recorded this month

Meteorological data indicates that these are the highest maximum temperatures recorded so far this month at both the Bengaluru City and HAL stations. On Thursday, temperatures rose slightly further to 35.4°C, reinforcing the ongoing heat trend.

The rise in temperature is being closely monitored, as April is typically the warmest month in Bengaluru, with average highs already hovering around 34°C.

Reasons behind the heat spike

Weather experts attribute the sudden increase in temperature to dry westerly winds prevailing during the mornings. These winds, common in April, tend to be warm and reduce cloud cover, thereby limiting the chances of convective rainfall that usually cools the city.

Urban factors are also contributing to the heat. Increased concretisation, reduced green cover, and heavy traffic congestion are intensifying the urban heat island effect, making conditions feel hotter than recorded temperatures.

Rain expected but heat to persist

The IMD has forecast dry weather across Karnataka for the next couple of days. However, from around April 11–12, Bengaluru is likely to experience cloudier skies and evening showers, which could bring temporary relief.

Despite the expected rainfall, maximum temperatures are likely to remain around 35°C in the coming week. Meteorologists have also warned that temperatures could rise further, potentially touching 39°C over the next two weeks if current conditions persist.

April historically the hottest month

Historically, April has been the hottest month for Bengaluru. The city recorded its highest-ever temperature of 39.2°C on April 25, 2016, while HAL airport recorded a peak of 38.3°C in April 1960.

The city usually witnesses pre-monsoon thunderstorms during this period, with an average of four rainy days and around 60 mm rainfall, offering intermittent relief from the heat.

Authorities issue heat advisory

The Bengaluru Urban district administration and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) have issued advisories warning of heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heat stroke.

District Commissioner G Jagadeesha has urged residents to stay updated with official forecasts and take necessary precautions to avoid health risks.

Health risks and medical advice

Hospitals across the city have begun reporting cases of heat-related ailments. Medical experts warn that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, fatigue, muscle pain, fainting, and a drop in blood pressure. Severe cases may result in heat stroke.

Doctors advise avoiding outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm, when temperatures peak. In suspected cases of heat stroke, individuals should be moved to a cool place immediately, hydrated, and cooled using wet cloths or ice packs. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist.

Precautionary measures for residents

Authorities have outlined several steps to cope with rising temperatures:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if not thirsty
  • Wear light, loose cotton clothing
  • Use sunglasses, hats, or umbrellas outdoors
  • Avoid going out during peak afternoon hours
  • Keep homes well ventilated
  • Avoid alcohol, tea, and coffee
  • Consume cooling drinks like buttermilk and lemon water
  • Include water-rich fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, and tender coconut

Special care is advised for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Conclusion

As Bengaluru faces rising temperatures, authorities are urging caution while anticipating some relief from upcoming rainfall. However, with heat likely to persist, residents are advised to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures to safeguard their health.
