Bengaluru: Mallikarjun Kharge, the newly elected Congress President, will take over his new position at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters on October 26.
At the event that day, he will also receive the certificate of his election to the position, From that moment on, he would deliver his new role.
As the first non-Gandhi to head the 137-year-old party in 24 years and follow longtime leader Sonia Gandhi, Kharge was elected its new president on Wednesday October 19 with more than 84% of the vote cast for him.
The 80-year-old Kharge defeated his 66-year-old opponent Shashi Tharoor.
Out of 9,385 votes cast by delegates, Kharge got 7,897, while Tharoor got 1072.
Kharge was the Rajya Sabha’s Leader of the Opposition, a position he resigned soon after filing his nomination for the Congress’ top post. He has been a minister for the Union for about 10 years. Kharge has been a Karnataka legislator nine times, although he was unable in reaching the position of Chief Minister.
He comes from a humble Dalit background and moved up the top position of the party to become its leader.
