Bengaluru Liquor Store Fined for Charging Customer for Branded Carry Bag
In a significant consumer rights ruling, the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Tonique, a popular liquor retailer, to pay Rs 5,000 in compensation to a customer for charging him for a carry bag that prominently displayed the store’s logo, outlet details, and branding.
The complaint was filed by Praveen B, a 31-year-old resident of St Thomas Town, who objected to paying for a bag that essentially served as advertisement for the store. The court found merit in his argument, ruling that customers should not be charged for carry bags that promote a retailer’s brand, as it amounts to unfair trade practice.
The Commission emphasized that forcing a consumer to pay for a branded bag violates their rights, especially when the bag acts as a marketing tool for the store. It also reinforced the notion that businesses should not pass on advertising costs to consumers under the guise of packaging charges.
The order is seen as a win for consumer rights advocacy, setting a precedent that may apply across other retail sectors. It highlights the growing awareness among consumers and the judiciary’s willingness to call out exploitative practices by retailers.
