Bengaluru: In a recent administrative reshuffle, Maheshwar Rao, Managing Director of BMRCL, formally took additional charge as the Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Wednesday.
The official transition of duties occurred in the presence of outgoing BBMP Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, who now steps into the role of BBMP Administrator. As part of the ceremonial handover, Rao received the symbolic keys to the BBMP headquarters and offered floral respects to the statue of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, widely honored as the founder of Bengaluru.
Tushar Giri Nath, who served in the role of commissioner for three years, now succeeds senior IAS officer Uma Shankar as the civic body’s administrator. Reflecting on his tenure, Nath remarked, “One always feels that more could have been accomplished when stepping down. While many tasks remain incomplete, the consistent support and constructive criticism from the media motivated us to perform better.”
Looking ahead, Maheshwar Rao addressed the city’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. He noted that during his previous role as special commissioner, Bengaluru had around 120 flood-prone locations. “That number has increased with the city’s rapid expansion, and efforts like desilting are underway to mitigate risks,” he added.
Rao’s dual role is expected to bring tighter coordination between metro rail development and civic infrastructure, especially as the city braces for seasonal challenges.
